PLP 700: Leadership Theory & Identification

Credits 3
This hybrid course will provide an overview of theoretical frameworks for the application of theory and best practices in your leadership. The course will focus on specific leadership topics such as the following: strategic leadership, systems thinking, team leadership, and change management.

PLP 705: Legacies in Leadership

Credits 3
Effective leaders are able to galvanize people around a compelling, inspirational vision and strategy, and to ten deal with people in was that bring out their best ideas and efforts. This course will introduce participants to the history of leadership and individual leaders in a variety of different professions through speakers, class discussions, reading assignments, and Harvard Business (HBR) cases on leadership effectiveness. Each student will participate in a 360 leadership survey and be asked to develop their own personal leadership legacy statement and development plan.

PLP 711: Stress and Wellness

Credits 3
This course will introduce participants to the need for self-care when one works in Community Advocacy. It will provide background and ideas for maintaining good mental and physical health while working with underserved populations.

PLP 721: Community Mental Health Issues

Credits 3
This course examines the issues that individuals with mental health crises or untreated conditions can have that impact the community. This will include depression (which may be related to aging), anxiety (which may be related to social media), suicidal tendencies, addiction, and untreated medical conditions such as schizophrenia.

PLP 722: The Community and Disabilities

Credits 3
This course will introduce participants to the types of disabilities found in the community. Emphasis will be placed on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and its affect, however, other disabilities, including physical disabilities, will be discussed as well.

PLP 730: Cultural Awareness Application

Credits 3
This course will introduce participants to current issues in cultural diversity awareness in various professional settings. Emphasis is placed on examining perspectives of self, society, and culture; broadening the understanding of diversity within a variety of settings; and recognizing that diversity augments personal growth and development.

PLP 731: Community Legal Issues

Credits 3
This course will introduce participants to current legal issues in community advocacy. It is designed to allow participants to be aware of the changing landscape and the need to be knowledge about laws that affect underserved populations in the community, and how these laws may interact.

PLP 741: Homelessness

Credits 3
This course will introduce participants to current issues involving the homeless in community advocacy. It will examine the intersection of homelessness issues with other community advocacy issues.

PLP 741: Captstone in Community Advocacy

Credits 3
This course requires participants to choose a real-world problem that affects their community or profession that is related to Community Advocacy. Participants will work over the course of the semester to document this issue/problem and prepare a presentation that proposes a potential solution.

PLP 745: Introduction to Data Analytics

Credits 3
The course will provide an introductory overview of how to interpret and use statistics for goal setting. Additionally, students will study several basic analytics techniques focusing on applying them in practice, analyzing the output, building intuition, and providing leverage in data-driven decision-making.

PLP 760: Communicaiton, Technology, and Speaking

Credits 3
This course provides an overview of the core concepts, historical trajectories, contemporary controversies in the design, use, and critical study of communication technologies. While the course takes a broad view of technology and considers different historical moments, it focuses on contemporary, internet-based system, cultures and the ability to present projects and new ideas to stakeholders.

PLP 775: Project Management

Credits 3
This course guides students through fundamental project managements concepts and behavioral skills needed to successfully launch and lead projects in a variety of industries. Additionally, this course is instrumental in preparation for the Capstone project.

PLP 789: Professional Leadership Experiential Learning Directed Independent Study

Credits 1
The MiM Professional Leadership Internship aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice to align with a student’s academic and experiential learning. In the internship, students will self-assess strengths, weaknesses, and areas of particular interest. They will increasingly assume responsibility for their continuing professional development by planning for and completing a program of filed-based experiences that can be used to assist with the Capstone PLP 790.

PLP 790: Capstone

Credits 3
This course will provide students with the opportunity (1) to reflect upon and integrate the practical organizational and leadership skills learned throughout the program and apply them to the real world, developing a multi-faceted plan to deal with a significant problem. The project will offer solutions to the practical, ethical, and social justice aspects of the issue. (2) to identify personal and professional growth based on PLP 700 Personal Development Plan and Leadership Philosophy
