Area Admissions Requirements

MUSIC EDUCATION and MUSIC EDUCATION: PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE EMPHASIS: Audition in the student's area of performance (ten minutes minimum) and/or a video teaching sample (seven to ten minutes of uninterrupted teaching), an undergraduate GPA at or above 2.75, and proof of teacher certification in music.

MUSIC EDUCATION WITH INITIAL CERTIFICATION: Audition in the student's area of performance (ten minutes minimum), to have earned an undergraduate GPA at or above 2.75, and have taken the Converse Analogies Test.

CONVERSE ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION IN MUSIC: An application for Converse Special Status Student and an application for the Converse Teacher Education Program. A statement of disclosure of felonies and misdemeanors. A statement of disclosure that the applicant did not student teach in a traditional teacher preparation program or attempt to complete another alternative certification program. A passing score on the Praxis 2: Music Content and Analysis and GPA of 2.75 with a 2.50 the minimum for provisional acceptance. The GPA in the content area major or the GPA in the last sixty hours of coursework may be used to meet this requirement. A current all-clear FBI/SLED fingerprint background check. Completed a file/dossier for teaching with the State Department of Education as an Alternative Certification Applicant. A conferred Bachelor’s degree in Music from an accredited institution with transcripts from all institutions on file with the Converse University Graduate Admissions Office. A letter of employment as a PK-12 music specialist in a South Carolina school district or charter school.

PERFORMANCE: Audition in the student's area of performance (twenty minutes minimum), and to have earned an undergraduate GPA at or above 2.75. In unusual circumstances, a video recording of a recent performance may be substituted for an on-campus audition. In such cases, the Performance Study level will be determined by an audition during registration for the student's first term in the Petrie School of Music.
